        "Sort the beans, cover with boiling water and soak for 30 minutes. (If preparing ahead, soak overnight in cold water instead.)",
        "Peel the potatoes and halve them. Rinse the barley.",
        "Chop the onions and fry in the oil until golden, in a large ovenproof pot. Place the meat in the center with the potatoes around it, and the beans and barley on top. Tuck in the eggs and kishke, add the butter (or margarine), sprinkle with the spices and add water to cover.",
        "Bring to a boil, simmer for 30 minutes, then transfer to a 220°F (100°C) oven overnight.",
