Grandma's Cake Draft

A tall, rich butter and orange cake with a toasted almond in every hollow of the pan, turned out and dusted with powdered sugar.

How I make it

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. Brush the pan generously with the melted butter.

  3. Place an almond in each hollow of the pan.

  4. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, until the mixture is light and airy.

  5. In a large bowl, mix the flour and the orange zest.

  6. On low speed, add the flour mixture to the butter mixture gradually, alternating with the orange juice. Begin and end with the flour.

  7. Pour into the pan, filling it all the way to the top (the cake doesn't rise).

  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.

  9. Cool in the pan, turn out and dust with powdered sugar.

What I've learned

  • I fill the pan all the way up, since this cake barely rises.
